Compass School has closed its doors. Founded in 1999 as an independent, nonprofit school, Compass served many public school students referred by their districts in small towns in southern Vermont. Compass became a valued and unusual school in the ETWC community in 2021, but in 2025 the school experienced financial difficulties and had to close.

This school was unique in that it is one of only a handful of independent schools that took students referred by their districts with a tuition arrangement. This worked well for 26 years, and the model could possibly be used elsewhere. Vermont is unusual in that it has no charter schools.
